Edinburgh’s Hogmanay – Message from the Skies 2019

Love Letters to Europe - Public Digital Artwork

Message from the Skies was produced by Edinburgh’s Hogmanay in partnership with the Edinburgh International Book Festival and Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature. Love letters to Europe celebrated Scotland’s connection to Europe and were projected around the capital on six of Edinburgh’s iconic buildings.

“The unique multi-artform event also saw six writers either from or based in Scotland working with ten of Scotland’s best artists, designers and musicians to create a series of six love letters to the continent.” Edinburgh’s Hogmanay

Message from the Skies – an immersive city-wide experience, using landmarks around the capital as a canvas for storytelling.

We were commissioned to collaborated with Scottish award-winning composer Pippa Murphy to create a stunning, impactful, and expressive audio and visual experience. This was in response to the emotive love letter written by Kapka Kassabova.  Our collaborative piece was projected mapped on the National Monument of Scotland on Calton Hill in Edinburgh.

Message from the Skies “brings the city to life in the dark days of January.”

Nick Barley, Director Edinburgh International Book Festival

We felt especially privileged to visually tell the story of Kassabova’s love letter to Europe. Firstly we created abstract and varied landscapes in response to her words reflecting the continent’s mythical roots and curious dualities. In addition, the visuals reacted to Murphy’s impressive score creating a powerful and poignant emotional experience.

We also created a secondary projection on the side of the monument where the audience could read and listen to Kassabova’s love letter in full. This not only allowed people to enjoy an intimate experience but also enabled them to absorb and reflect on her words.

Message from the Skies ran from the 1st – 25th January and received a four-star review from the Scotsman.
